Frequently asked questions about decking paint
How does non-slip decking paint work?
Non-slip decking paint work through the use of micro-aggregates (clusters of tiny particles that increase friction between your shoes and the surface, thereby preventing slippage).
How to paint decking?
To paint your decking, you’ll need some decking paint, a paintbrush, a pressure washer, a broom, a scrubbing brush, decking cleaner, and a belt sander with 80-grit sandpaper. For the best results, follow these instructions:
- Check the weather forecasts and wait for several days of clear weather with low chances of rain.
- Sand down any splintered parts of the deck and sweep away the debris.
- Clean the deck surface with a pressure washer, then use a scrubbing brush and decking cleaner to clean the deck thoroughly.
- Let the paint dry for a day or two.
- Once the decking is dry, protect the surrounding area by covering any adjoining areas that could come into contact with the decking paint then sweeping clean (you could use painter’s tape for this).
- Stir the decking paint and pour some into a paint tray.
- Apply paint to the decking using long, even brushstrokes and painting in the direction of the grain; start with the raised features such as railings and move on to the floor, leaving an area for you to get out when you’re finished.
- Once you’re finished, leave the paint to dry out completely for around 24 hours, then repeat the process as necessary (two or three coats are generally required for the best results).
