Frequently asked questions about wood preserver
  1. What is wood preserver?

Wood preserver (also referred to as wood protector) is used to protect wooden surfaces from damage resulting from funghi, mould and wood rot. Wood preservatives tend to come in three main varieties: water-based, oil-based, or solvent-based.

  2. How to apply wood preserver?

In most cases, you should apply wood preserver before treating the wood with other substances, e.g. sealants, paint, or varnishes. You can apply the preserver either using a bristle brush or by dipping the wood into the preserver itself, liberally until the wood is fully saturated. You will know when saturation is reached, because the wood won’t be able to absorb any more preserver. Apply at least 2 coats for effective coverage and clean up any spillages using white spirit.

  3. How long does wood preserver take to dry?

The product should be dry to the touch within 2-4 hours. However, to ensure the wood preserver dries completely, you should leave at least a 24 hour period in between applying coats.

  4. What is the best wood preserver for sheds and fences?

If you are looking to protect a wooden fence, shed, or other outbuilding, we recommend using either Ronseal shed and fence preserver or Cuprinol shed and fence protector. Both of these products provide waterproofing and penetrate deep into the wood for quality protection. The Ronseal protector in particular is designed for maximum protection against rot, decay, and woodworm attacks.
