Wood Varnish

Wood varnish is a clear or tinted hard protective finish or film that penetrates the wood. They typically consist of a drying oil, resin and thinner or solvent. Wood varnishes are used in the final steps of wood finishing to achieve a film for shine and protection. Much like paints, varnishes are available in a wide variety of finishes such as matt, natural, satin, silk or high gloss.

Frequently asked questions about wood varnish
  1. How to remove varnish from wood?

There are several different ways that you can remove varnish from wood:

Sanding - Use our Rodo Glass Paper to gently buff and remove any old wood varnish. We would recommend wrapping the sandpaper (the abrasive side facing outwards) around a block of foam, wood or cork and stapling or glueing into place. Simply move the sandpaper back and forth, with the grain, in a straight motion. Be careful not to sand against the grain or in circular motions as it can create scratches in the wood.

Wood Strippers - If you are concerned about the amount of fine-particle dust that can be created from sanding wood, then consider choosing a wood stripper. Products such as Ronseal Decking Stripper and Liberon Fine Wood Stripper are ideal for removing varnish from wood with little effort. Check out the datasheets for the individual products for specific instructions.

  2. How to varnish wood?

All of our wood varnishes will have individual instructions on application. These can be found in each product page’s datasheet. However, the general rule of thumb is to ensure that all existing varnish, waxes, oils or wood stains have been removed. You will also need to proficiently clean off any dust, dirt or grease and smooth out any uneven surfaces. Once the wood is fully prepped, follow your product’s instructions on applying it. This will normally involve applying the wood stain using a synthetic or natural brush, roller brush or rags.

  3. Why varnish wood?

There are plenty of benefits to varnishing wood. Not limited to:

    • Provides professional sheen, softness and flexibility to wood
    • Protects the wood and helps to prevent hairline cracks
    • Absorb the appearance of minor scratches and external damage.
    • Helps in reducing the transfer of moisture between the wood and the surrounding weather.
